Grant Program

KEEPING OUR HISTORY ALIVE

Early 1999 the Tulare County Historical Society recognized its responsibility to assist and support historical efforts in Tulare County. A committee was formed to develop grant guidelines. By August, the Board approved the committee's Grant Program proposal, setting aside $2,000 annually.

Any organizations, institutions and/or individuals involved in the preservation, promotion, restoration or enhancement of Tulare County history are encouraged to apply. These are just a few examples the Society will consider for financial assistance:

- Preserving or restoring a historical building

- Researching, writing or publishing a book

- Acquiring equipment

- Reproducing historical photographs

- Assisting in the development of historical projects

However, ALL requests demonstrating some fashion of Tulare County historical preservation are welcome!

Applications are accepted annually, December 1 - March 15. Applicants may reapply on an annual basis.

April each year, the Grant Committee reviews applications and makes its recommendations to the Board. Grants are then awarded to those selected.

CONGRATULATIONS!

2008 GRANT RECIPIENTS

FIRST ARTS

In 1944, Three Rivers artist and sculptor Carroll Barnes carved a marble birdbath adorned with a family of birds. It was placed on the grounds at Visalia's Tulare County Library. Over the years, the water function for the birdbath and the base have been neglected. First Arts will restore this art piece to its original beauty and functionality!

SEQUOIA NATURAL HISTORY ASSOCIATION

The Sequoia Natural History Association (SNHA) supports education in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and Devils Postpile National Monument. It is also the education partner for the US Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Kaweah. The association produces two to three new publications annually. Grant funds will help SNHA donate 100 copies of their 2008 book entitled "Floods of the Kaweah" to local libraries, schools, area experts and students.
