Los Tulares

Recording The Past

Los Tulares, originated by Harold Schutt in 1948, is the quarterly bulletin published by the Tulare County Historical Society. Several names were suggested, but the one chosen has the most significance. Los Tulares is one of the old place names of California. When the Spanish settlers along the coast explored the interior valley, they encountered great swamps filled with tules. They applied the name "Valle de los tulares," or simply "los tulares." Even after the American occupation, the upper or southern part of the San Joaquin was known as Tulare Valley.

The original masthead for Los Tulares was designed by Harold Schutt and Frank Selover of the Mt. Whitney Press in Lindsay, California.

In September 1998 a new masthead was created by Julia Smith, design and illustration for the Golden Anniversary issue.

In over fifty years, there have only been four people filling the job as Los Tulares editor. Beginning in 1948 Harold Schutt, TCHS President at the time, meticulously edited the bulletin for almost 37 years.

Then Joseph E. Doctor (Tulare County's own "country journalist") became editor in 1985. He held the title until his death in 1995. Annie R. Mitchell then served as Honorary Chairman of the Publications Committee until her passing in August 2000.

Maureen Anderson is our newest editor and has been delivering Los Tulares to TCHS members since 1997.

Los Tulares has become a standard reference for historians throughout California, with complete files in the Tulare County Library. A comprehensive index by Joseph Vicenti was completed in 2001.

Los Tulares is mailed quarterly to our membership. Share your story! The Publication Committee would like to balance each issue of Los Tulares with articles about all parts of Tulare County. Each of the various areas of our county has its own interesting history that should be recorded in these pages. Your written recollections or photographs of Tulare County are welcome for publication consideration.

Origin of Name "Los Tulares"

Several names were suggested for our Historical Bulletin but the one chosen seems to have the most significance. Los Tulares is one of the old place names of California. When the Spanish settlers along the coast explored the interior valley, they encountered great swamps filled with tules. They applied the name "Valle de los tulares" or simply "los tulares." Even after the American occupation, the upper or southern part of the San Joaquin was known as Tulare Valley.

Los Tulares will appear quarterly, usually as a four page bulletin. We shall attempt to have a good proportion of original writing but shall reprint material that is rare, and through the kindness of our local newspapers will use clippings that otherwise have only limited circulation in our county. As funds permit we shall illustrate our stories. We solicit suggestions from our readers.
